Description

The village of Ilieni is located in the valley of the Ilieni stream, which springs from the Baraolt Mountains, on the right bank of the Olt River, at an altitude of 530–540 meters. The village is crossed by DJ 112, the road connecting Sfântu Gheorghe and Brașov. Within the territory of the village there is also a carbonated mineral water spring known as Anna’s Fountain.

The first documented mention of the settlement dates back to 1332, although archaeological evidence proves that the area had been inhabited much earlier. Excavations carried out in 1910 on the left bank of the Ilieni stream revealed settlements belonging to the Starčevo–Criș, Ariușd–Cucuteni and Coțofeni cultures. At the same site, traces of stone walls and Roman vessels were discovered. In the forest near the village, a billon coin of the Roman emperor Didius Julianus was also found.

On the banks of the Olt River, west of the village toward Dobolii de Jos and Ariușd, in the place called “Dealu Mare”, an urn with four knobs, a cup and ceramic fragments dating from the Second Iron Age were discovered.

During excavations carried out in 1965, in the place called “Roata de Fier” (Kerekesvas), Dacian ceramic fragments dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD were discovered.

Starting in 1876, the village of Ilieni belonged to Trei Scaune County within the Kingdom of Hungary. This situation ended in 1920 with the signing of the Treaty of Trianon, which established Hungary’s borders with its neighboring states.

During the interwar period, the locality was part of Trei Scaune County, and starting in 1968, after the abolition of the Hungarian Autonomous Region, it became part of the administrative territory of the present-day Covasna County.

The village was named after Saint Elijah of the Old Testament. It appears in the 1567 register under the name Ilieni, a name it still bears today.

The locality was once a mining village; between 1868 and 1961, an underground lignite mine operated here.

Today, the local economy is based on timber exploitation and primary wood processing, dairy processing, garment manufacturing, plastic processing, as well as the construction materials industry, trade, and agrotourism. However, the main activity remains agriculture, including crop cultivation and animal husbandry.
