Gardening for children with experiential learning.
The Little Gardeners Program is an innovative initiative in the region, coordinated by the Sepsi Metropolitan Area in cooperation with the agronomy students of the Faculty of Sapientia EMTE, the Covasna County School Inspectorate, and the Covasna County Agricultural Directorate.
The aim of the program is to help children acquire, from an early age, basic knowledge of environmental awareness and sustainable living, while also discovering the world of gardening through hands-on experience.
The program is intended for children from preschool age up to 8th grade and is available throughout the entire Sepsi Metropolitan Area. Group registration is primarily carried out through educational institutions, but the program is also open to other organized communities, as well as individual participants.
Participants receive a seed package containing radish, lettuce, carrot, zucchini, green peas, cucumber, beetroot, spinach, and a surprise seed. The students join the program by creating their own vegetable garden, which they maintain throughout the agricultural season.
In addition to providing seeds, the program also offers professional support: students and lecturers from Sapientia University in Sfântu Gheorghe provide guidance through short instructional videos on plant care, supporting students, teachers, and parents.
Participation in the program also involves certain formal requirements. Participants must prepare three reports on the development of their garden, accompanied by photo documentation, which are submitted at pre-established times. At the end of the program, the most dedicated participants, both in the individual and group categories, will be awarded prizes.
