Sepsibükszád (Romanian: Bixad) is a charming village with deep historical roots in Romania, located in Covasna County within the Szeklerland region. The village lies on the upper reaches of the Olt River, between the Baraolt and Csomád Mountains, at an elevation of approximately 650–700 meters above sea level, surrounded by picturesque natural scenery. Its location is advantageous: the DN12/E78 highway and the railway line both pass through it, providing good transportation links to the major centers of Transylvania.
The settlement was first mentioned in written sources in the 17th century, and for centuries, glass manufacturing played a dominant role in local industry: the products of the Bükszád glass factory, which operated during the 18th and 19th centuries, were known far and wide. Later, industrial activity shifted to other sectors—such as quarrying, agriculture, and small-scale crafts. The village was part of Malna for a long time (1968–2004), then became an independent village again.
According to the 2011 census data, the village’s population is approximately 1,585, which represents a slight decrease compared to previous years. The overwhelming majority of locals are of Hungarian ethnicity, accounting for over 97% of the population, and Hungarian is the native language of most residents.
In addition, there are also small Roma and Romanian communities living here. In terms of religious affiliation, most residents are Roman Catholic, but there are also significant Reformed and Orthodox communities in Sepsibükszád.
The municipality covers an area of more than 60 km², a significant portion of which is covered by forests, while agricultural land and pastures are also substantial. In terms of housing, most properties have electricity and running water, and the sewage system is partially developed.
Today, Sepsibükszád preserves its Szekler cultural traditions, historical past, and natural treasures. The surrounding hiking trails, mountainous landscapes, and historical sites—such as medieval castle ruins and the local built heritage—make it an attractive destination for both locals and visitors.
