The town is situated in a picturesque natural setting, at the foot of the Bodoc and Baraolt Mountains, on the high terrace of the Olt River. Its geographical location is particularly advantageous: it is accessible via National Road DN12 from Sfântu Gheorghe (to the south) and Miercurea Ciuc (to the north), and rail service is provided by the nearby Malnaș Băi station. The commune is located in the immediate vicinity of well-known tourist destinations, such as Lake Sfânta Ana and the Băile Tușnad resort.
The town is rich in natural resources. Its acidic and alkaline mineral springs are renowned, among which the Bedő Spring is widely known. A unique local specialty is “Rakottág,” a product registered with the State Office for Inventions and Trademarks, considered one-of-a-kind worldwide. Among the traditional crafts, stone carving stands out: local artisans, known for their exceptional skill, have been shaping stone for generations, helping to define the settlement’s visual identity. Notable achievements have also been made in sports, including cycling accomplishments associated with the late Fejér Ákos.
Throughout history, Micfalău has truly become “a little Transylvania”: Székely Hungarians, Romanians, Roma, Czechs, Italians, and other nationalities have lived here peacefully, contributing together to the community’s current character. According to the most recent census data, the population stands at 1,625 residents, the overwhelming majority of whom are of Hungarian ethnicity, though other ethnic groups are also present. In terms of religion, Roman Catholics and Protestants predominate.
Community life is active and dynamic: in collaboration with the local administration, several associations and civic organizations carry out cultural, sports, and community activities, strengthening the spirit of belonging and local identity.
The commune’s current motto evocatively expresses the community’s strength and determination:
“Mikóújfalu is a village as strong as a rock!”
